I have an aunt who I have not seen for years, and we used to be very close. We had lost touch for a while, but this year we got reconnected on Facebook. She’s a second-degree aunt, but I remember, growing up in the province and having my aunt in my happiest childhood memories.
During my toddler years, she always visited me in our family home, even helped me through my alphabet and colors. She used to always go to my school events, until she had to go overseas to work.
And then I went off to college in Manila and eventually got a job. Next thing I knew it’s been 10 years since we saw each other last.
This is going to be the first Christmas since we got reconnected, thanks to technology. And thanks to technology too, I am planning to give back to her by sending her a special gift of love this Christmas.
She can’t come to Manila, and I can’t come to our province. But while we can’t physically meet, I’ve found a way for me to send her a nice present: I’ve decided to sponsor her noche buena. That way she could prepare whatever she wants for her family without calculating every peso.
And I don’t even have to go to my actual bank to do this. Through mobile wallet GCash, I can transfer funds directly to her bank account from the comfort of my desk at work. All I need to do is get her account number first, which I plan to do discreetly through my cousins. They’re excited to be in on this surprise.
Because I use my GCash for everything—paying bills, buying load, eating out, doing groceries—it’s always well-funded. My payroll account is linked to my GCash so I could cash-in anytime, anywhere.
As with all my money transfers, I just tap the Send Money to Bank Account option, input my aunt’s name, account number and amount of cash I want to send. Once I press send, the money goes to her bank account instantly.
I plan to send her noche buena budget about a week from Christmas so she has some time for grocery shopping. I told my cousins to take her to Puregold for the best value on groceries. Plus, Puregold accepts cashless payments via GCash, in case one of them has the app.
GCash’s bank transfer feature is so awesome as it’s available even on weekends or holidays, and it is linked to almost all the major banks. It also does not charge any bank transfer fee, so that’s good for me. With all the expenses this season, I don’t want to pay unnecessary fees.
I just can’t wait to do this for my aunt. I hope after this, we could get together and share a hearty meal for real, just like we used to.
